About the Game

Champion Island is a browser game developed by Google as an interactive Doodle to celebrate the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games while paying tribute to Japanese folklore and culture.

What is Champion Island about?

The story follows Lucky, a calico cat who arrives at Champion Island in search of adventure. Upon arrival, she is challenged by two Komainu (mythological guardians) to a table tennis match to test her skills. After defeating them, she discovers that the island is ruled by seven champions, each an expert in a different sport. By defeating these champions and obtaining their Sacred Scrolls, Lucky aims to become the island’s ultimate champion.

How do you play Champion Island?

Control Lucky, the calico cat, as you explore Champion Island and compete in sports-themed mini-games against local champions. Each victory grants you a Sacred Scroll.

Additionally, complete side quests by helping the island’s inhabitants with tasks such as finding items or completing trade sequences. Completing these quests rewards you with trophies displayed in the Trophy House at the center of the island.

Controls

  • Movement: Use the arrow keys to move Lucky around the island.
  • Interaction: Press the spacebar to interact with characters and objects.
  • Control Menu: Access the control menu at any time by pressing "Esc."
  • Table Tennis: Use the arrow keys to move the paddle and press the spacebar to hit the ball.
  • Skateboarding: Arrow keys control movement; Z and X perform tricks.
  • Archery: Aim and shoot using the mouse or designated keys shown at the start of the mini-game.

Game Features

  • Art Style & Retro Design: The game features graphics inspired by 16-bit video games, evoking the classic aesthetics of the 80s and 90s. This nostalgic design appeals to both veteran and new players.
  • Variety of Sports Mini-Games: Play through seven Olympic-themed mini-games, including table tennis, skateboarding, archery, rugby, artistic swimming, sport climbing, and marathon running. Each sport has unique mechanics and challenges to keep players engaged.
  • Japanese Cultural Influence: The game is heavily inspired by Japanese folklore and culture, featuring mythological characters and landscapes that represent various regions of Japan. This cultural immersion enhances the experience and provides players with a unique glimpse into Japan’s rich traditions.

Secret Side Quest: "Do not trust the bird"

After collecting 21 out of 22 available trophies, players can unlock a secret side quest. To activate it, they must go to the Trophy House podium and select the empty trophy space. Upon doing so, they will receive the message: "Do not trust the bird." This message signifies the start of a hidden mission that delves deeper into the island’s story and its inhabitants.

Steps to access the mission:

  1. Collect 21 trophies: Complete side quests and challenges to obtain most of the available trophies.
  2. Go to the Trophy House: Find the central building on the island where collected trophies are displayed.
  3. Interact with the empty podium space: Select the empty slot to activate the hidden mission.

How long does Champion Island take to complete?

The game’s length varies depending on playstyle and level of completion:

  • Main Story: Completing only the main story takes approximately 53 minutes.
  • Main Story + Extras: Playing side quests and additional challenges extends playtime to about 1 hour and 33 minutes.
  • 100% Completion: To achieve 100% completion, including all trophies and collectibles, players typically spend around 2 hours and 20 minutes.

These times may vary based on individual skill and pace.

Who created Champion Island?

The Champion Island Doodle game was developed by Google in collaboration with the Japanese animation studio Studio 4°C and released in 2021. This partnership combined Google's expertise in interactive design with Studio 4°C’s anime-inspired artistic vision.
